A digital tourist resident card is a type of honorary resident card that allows you to receive discounts on travel amenities and experience programs such as lodging, food and drinks, and experiences in the region by using the QR code issued through the ‘Every Corner of Korea’ mobile app.
The tourist ID card was designed to increase the number of visits and length of stay of travelers to a region through tourism in a situation where there is a serious risk of regional extinction due to aging and population outflow. This project was operated on a pilot basis in Pyeongchang-gun and Okcheon-gun among the 89 population reduction regions designated by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety in 2022, and was expanded to a total of 11 regions this year. The affected regions include Pyeongchang-gun, Jeongseon-gun, Ganghwa-gun, Taean-gun, Danyang-gun, Okcheon-gun, Geochang-gun, Goryeong-gun, Busan Yeongdo-gu, Gochang-gun, and Shinan-gun.
Tourist resident cards can be issued at every corner of Korea website (https://korean.visitkorea.or.kr/main/main.do). Those eligible for issuance of a tourist resident card are those who do not have an address in the relevant area. To apply, simply select the current region of residence and the local government where you wish to apply for a tourist resident card. Discount benefits are applied when you receive a tourist identification card, visit a designated business, and check the QR code.
11 tourist resident cards were issued. When I looked at the benefits, I was able to see at a glance information on sightseeing, experiences, food and beverage, lodging, and shopping that could benefit, along with tips for visiting.
While I stopped by Danyang Gyeonggi Market, I took a look around and visited a bakery where I could receive benefits from a tourist ID card. After choosing a cake, I scanned the QR code in front of the cashier and showed the discount certificate, which gave me a 1,000 won discount. The process was simple and not complicated, so it was convenient to use from issuance to use. In terms of sightseeing and experiences, there are many exclusions on weekends and public holidays, so I was not able to use it, but you can receive various other tourist benefits, so it would be good to refer to it if you visit the area.
The digital tourism resident card is a project to revitalize tourism in regions experiencing a population extinction crisis, and is said to have had effective results in the local economy by promoting actual local visits and tourism consumption. If you receive a tourist resident card through the Every Corner of Korea website, you can use not only festivals and visiting tips for the region, but also an AI travel planner that automatically creates a travel course. If you have plans to travel to the area, it would be a good idea to take advantage of the tourist ID card benefits.
