Names registered in the family relationship register must be transcribed syllable by syllable according to the phonetic range, and phonetic changes due to pronunciation are not reflected.
Here, ‘Kimbitna’ is pronounced as ‘Kimbinna’ by consonant assimilation in the standard Korean pronunciation method, but in the passport, it must be written separately as ‘BITNA’ by syllable.
If the Korean name matches the syllables of the foreign name, this foreign name can be written as the passport name.
However, there are exceptions. In Korea, there are many people who use Korean-style Bible names in translated forms such as John, Paul, David, and Joseph, but these names cannot be written in a foreign language and must be written as they are pronounced in Korean.
In principle, English names should be written suffixed, but if desired, a hyphen (-) may be added, and spaces may be used if desired. However, if the affixing changes when reissuing your passport, you may not be able to use your previously issued foreign visa or ID card, so you must tell the issuing staff whether you have a visa or not.
Unless there are special circumstances, changes to the English name on your passport are strictly restricted. This also applies to situations where the passport you were previously using has expired and is being reissued. Changes cannot be made unless there are reasons permitted by the Passport Act, so you must carefully spell the information correctly when issuing a new passport.
Even if a passport is issued because the agent entered the English name incorrectly, changes are strictly restricted and the passport holder must bear any resulting disadvantages.
These days, many people use English names separately from their Korean names. Unless you have dual citizenship, it is impossible to register an English name. The rule is to write the Korean name listed in the family relationship register phonetically.
Matching family surnames is not mandatory, but unless there are special reasons, it is recommended to match the English surnames of family members who have already been issued passports. This is because there may be cases where family members need to prove that they are a family when going through immigration and departure screening, and if their last names are spelled differently, they may experience inconvenience.
There are many reasons that may prevent you from changing your passport name. If you are forcibly evicted for violating the laws of the country you are traveling to, some people use the expedient method of changing their English name and then visiting the country again.
