Why is a dividend more attractive than a monthly rent? This is because there is no stress of having to deal with troublesome tenants who don’t pay rent or break down like a building. Of course, there is a risk that the stock price will fall, but if you choose a company as carefully as you would when buying a building, you can get a sufficiently stable return.

When and how do you receive dividends?
The frequency and timing of dividend payments varies from company to company. 주식 배당금 받는법
For example, Samsung Electronics pays a total of 4 times in March, June, September and December. Macquarie Infrastructure, an infrastructure investment company, pays twice in June and December.
Kakao, Korea’s leading platform company, pays only once every December as of December. Realty Inc., an American real estate REIT company, pays a monthly dividend.
Occasionally, special dividends are paid in addition to the regular dividend schedule when the company generates special profits.
Company name Number of annual payments Dividend payment standards
Samsung Electronics 4 times March, June, September, December
Macquarie Infrastructure Twice June, December
Cacao 1 time in December
Realty Income 12 episodes (monthly) The last day or 1st of every month, etc.
More frequent dividend payments means more active return of profits to shareholders. So basically, the more frequent the dividend payout, the better for the shareholders.
But if you pay dividends frequently and the stock price goes down, it’s useless. For example, in a company in a growth phase like Kakao, it is much more beneficial for shareholders to grow the company by investing appropriately rather than distributing dividends (since the stock price has to go up). On the other hand, it may be advantageous to receive a slightly higher dividend distribution when stable income is secured by growing over a certain level like Samsung Electronics (Samsung Electronics, of course, was a stock with a steady growth in its share price).
Schedule to remember to receive dividends (ex-dividend date, dividend base date)
In order not to miss out on dividends, you need to know the dividend payout criteria. When it comes to dividends, there are the concepts of a dividend base date, an ex-dividend date, and a dividend payment date.
Ex-dividend date-Dividend base date-Shareholder list-Registration-Pattern 1
In order to receive dividends, you must have ownership of the stock on the dividend date. For example, if March 31st is the dividend date, you must have ownership on March 31st.
However, if you buy the stock on March 31st, you will not receive a dividend. This is because even if a transaction is concluded, ‘two business days’ must pass before payment is made and ownership is confirmed. So, even if you buy on March 31st, ownership is confirmed on April 2nd. So, you have to buy the stock by March 29, two days before you want to receive the dividend.
Why is it important to have ownership on the dividend date? This is because the shareholder register is closed on the dividend base date. If March 31 is the base date, even if you acquire ownership on April 1, you will not be able to register in the shareholder register. From December 30th, even if you buy, you will no longer receive dividends. One business day before the dividend base date is called the ex-dividend date.
※ Closing the shareholder list is not only to pay dividends, but also to confirm the right to participate in shareholders’ meetings and exercise voting rights. This is because if the shareholder keeps changing, it becomes difficult to prepare for a shareholder meeting.
Dividends are not paid immediately even if the shareholder register is secured. Usually, payments are made after 2 to 4 months (this is paid when a board meeting is held and dividends are confirmed). For example, if an interim dividend is decided in June, it is paid in August, or if a settlement dividend in December is decided, it is paid in March or April of the following year. The date the dividend is actually paid is called the dividend payment date.
meaning
Dividend Base Date The date on which dividends are paid must be registered in the shareholder register.
On the ex-dividend date the right to receive dividends expires.
Dividend Payment Date The date the dividend is actually paid, usually 2 to 4 months later
If you bought the stock before the ex-dividend date, all you have to do is wait. Dividends are deposited into the securities account according to the number of shares. You can make withdrawals to your account, or you can put it as a deposit and use it to buy stock.
The essence of the concept of the ex-dividend date and the ex-dividend date is that it takes two business days to acquire ownership. Therefore, if the stock market is closed on public holidays or other holidays, you should buy sooner.
In Korea, December 31, which is often the dividend base date, is a holiday, so it is good to keep this in mind.

If December 31st is the dividend base date, it is a holiday, so you must purchase stocks by December 28th, three business days before, in order to receive dividends.
How to check the dividend schedule and amount?
Dividends are announced after they are decided at the shareholders’ meeting, so it is difficult for ordinary investors to know the exact amount and payment date in advance.
It is common to predict a company’s current performance against its previous dividend payout history.

How much tax do I have to pay if I receive a dividend?
Unfortunately, if you look at the amount of dividends deposited into your securities account, it is much less than the amount of “dividend per share x number of shares”. This is because dividends are paid by deducting dividend income tax before the payment is made by the securities company. So, how much is the dividend income tax?
Dividend tax 15.4% Real amount received
If the dividend is 1,000 won per share, 154 won 846 won
If the total dividend is 10,000 won, 1540 won 8460 won
If the total dividend is 100,000 won, 15,400 won 84,600 won
If the total dividend is 1 million won, 154,000 won 846,000 won
Dividend income tax is 15.4%, which is not a small percentage. So, when calculating dividends, you need to consider taxes in advance (and it hurts a little less).
Separate from dividend income tax, if financial income from trading stocks, funds, and derivatives, including dividends, exceeds 20 million won, comprehensive financial income tax is imposed. Doing the math little by little can lead to a lucrative investment.
※ For reference, the global income tax rate is 6.6~49.5% (including local income tax) depending on the amount. It’s not good to pay a lot of tax, but I want to make enough money to worry about taxes!
